Today's Military:

Misconceptions

DENNIS COSTELLO: When you think about the Marine Corps, you think about John Wayne, like someone had mentioned, about movies and he’s the hero, and it’s constant bombing and fighting, and Saving Private Ryan. There’s a whole lot more than that.

RONALD BROWN: When I listen to the news, and I’m not very pleased with what I hear, because they don’t paint a broad enough picture of what the Military is about or what they do.

MARY TURNER: I think there’s a lot of misconceptions about what military service is about. And I know that my sons got some advice from their friends, you know, why would you want to go to the Naval Academy? Why don’t you go someplace else and get a real college experience? And so I think listening to all points of view is important so you really get a sense of what it really is all about.

DENNIS COSTELLO: There’s more to the Military than just conflicts. It’s a lifestyle, it’s a way to learn, it’s a way to grow daily.

DEBBIE PARKER: The Military wants to see these young men and women be successful. They are there to encourage, to train. They’re not there to belittle, but they want to see them be successes.

MARY TURNER: We had conversations about what it really means to go into the Service, that it’s not charging up the hill necessarily. Many times, it’s sitting around, and waiting, and doing nothing, and just being vigilant.

DENNIS COSTELLO: I think that when you’re 19 or 18, you’re trying to prove yourself and see how tough you are, but actually what you learn is how skilled you are, and how much you can make a difference if you really try and apply yourself.
