You Have A Calling.

Core Values

After Sept. 11, Nathanael knew that he wanted to help protect the country. To fulfill his passion, he met with recruiters from several different Services. In the end, he found himself drawn to the Coast Guard's values: Honor, respect and devotion to duty. He was also interested in the Coast Guard's specific roles, which involve port protection, national security, rescue missions and keeping drugs out of the United States. "I was here, at home, protecting the home front," he says.

Aiming to Be the Best

As a Maritime Enforcement Specialist, Nathanael plays many crucial roles on the Coast Guard Cutter Farallon in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He manages and maintains weapons, and he also serves as a law enforcement instructor, which involves teaching others to use weapons correctly. All of these duties involve keeping people — including his fellow service members — safe. "The last thing I want to do is for [one of my shipmates] to get hurt.... That's why I try to give as much attention to detail as possible."
